SWAN GIVEN POLICE ESCORT TO SAFETY

Mercia Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) had an unusual start to the shift yesterday, (Thursday 17 September), when an errant swan appeared on a road in South Derbyshire, bringing traffic to a temporary halt.

Police received a report of a young water bird weaving in and out of fast-flowing traffic on Repton Road, Willington.

Officer Bob attended the location and discovered a feathered swan waddling with wild abandon from side to side. After a short but interesting encounter, and with the help of two colleagues from Swadlincote Police Station, the bird was steered safely off the road and away from passing vehicles.

Thankfully, the swan was unharmed and continued its journey to a much safer location.

Police would like to thank two big-hearted members of the public who stopped to help – and to the passing motorists who showed great patience while the situation was brought under control.

As for the shuffling swan, it was given some words of advice about road safety - although the feathered suspect refused to comment, before simply waddling away from the scene in the direction of the River Trent.
